The trains between Fiumicino Airport and Termini station runs regularly throughout the day, every 15 minutes. The first Leonardo Express train of the day leaves from Roma Termini at 4:50am and runs until 11:35pm. The last train leaves from Roma Termini at 11:35pm and from Fiumicino Airport at 12:23am.

The cost of Leonardo Express train tickets

A one-way ticket for the Leonardo Express train costs €14, and there is only one class of service. There are no discounts if you buy both your outward and return ticket at the same time.

Children under the age of 4 travel for free and a child between the ages of 4 and 12 can travel without paying, if there is a paying adult travelling with them. 

Be aware that children aged 12 and older will need a regular adult ticket, otherwise you might get a €50 fine.

If you're traveling with a group, you can get a discount with the Mini-groups fare: buy 4 tickets for just €40 instead of €56.

You can bring a small dog with you (with a certificate of registration with the canine registry) at no extra cost on Leonardo Express train, or bring a cat or other small pets inside an appropriate carrier.

How to reach Leonardo Express train station

Once you land to Fiumicino Airport, it's easy to reach the train platform, as you don't have to leave the airport building. If you arrives to Terminal 3, once you pick-up your luggage and leave the Customs, follow the yellow sign for "Train". The walk is only 4-5 minutes, using escalators along the way.

If you arrives to Terminal 1, after you collect your luggage and leave the Customs, walk for about a minute following the "Train" sign, until you reach the elevators (on the right side). Take the elevator to Level 2, then again follow the yellow sign "Train" until you reach the train platform. This will take about 10 minutes or less.

Buying the tickets at the airport station is super easy. There are many Trenitalia ticket machines that accept both cash or credit cards and the process is quick. Make a few steps and you'll reach ticket windows, where you can buy tickets for Leonardo Express in a minute (the staff speaks English).

Buying Leonardo express train tickets at ticket machines is super easy:

  • Select “Roma Termini” as your destination
  • Select which train and time you would like to travel on - be sure to select the Leonardo Express option, as there is a cheaper train available which takes much longer to get to Roma Termini (plus, you need to change trains once)
  • Select what kind of tickets and how many of each you would like to buy (adult or child)
  • Press "Forward" to skip the page with seat assignments, which don't exist on the Leonardo Express
  • A summary of all tickets will appear on the screen - press “Purchase”

Reaching Termini Station is easy, as both metro line A and metro line B meets here and you can travel here from any other part of Rome. You can also use buses or taxis.

How to buy Leonardo Express train tickets at Termini Station

All around the Termini Station, you'll find numerous Trenitalia ticket machines, from where you can get tickets for Leonardo Express.

There is also the Trenitalia ticket office, situated on the platform level (open every day from 6:30am to 10:05pm). You'll notice a huge line here, but it moves fairly quickly and the staff is helpful and speaks a good English.

To avoid waiting, enter through the office door and go to the left, where you'll find more ticket machines and one Trenitalia staff member, who will be happy to help you with buying your tickets.

Tickets bought at ticket machines are open, meaning they allow you to travel anytime on that day.

Be sure to validate your tickets before boarding the trains!

Don't forget to validate your tickets at validator machine, once you are on the platform. Insert your ticket until you hear a clicking sound. Not validating your ticket will result in a €50 fine.

Once you arrive to Termini, you can easily find a taxi or use metro to reach your hotel or apartment. Some parts of Rome are not served by metro, so you'll need to take a taxi (such as Trastevere). From Termini you can catch a metro to Spanish Steps, the Vatican or the Colosseum area. 

From Roma Termini Station, you can reach numerous destinations within Italy. The station serves as a hub for high-speed trains (Trenitalia and Italo), which can take you away to cities such as NaplesFlorence, Milan and Venice in just a few hours.

Train tickets are pretty affordable, especially if you buy them well in advance (companies release the tickets 5-6 months ahead).

Visiting Florence from Rome is a breeze. The fast trains (Frecciarossa and Italo) take only 1.5-hour between these two cities, making the journey so pleasant and quick. The trains are comfortable and clean with friendly staff.

Book early enough (a couple of months in-advance) and get Trenitalia tickets for only €21.90 (for standard class - non-refundable). For getting a little bit more comfort, choose business class for only €29.90. 

You can even make a day trip from Rome to Florence, taking the earliest train and returning late in the evening. Once you arrive to Florence at Santa Maria Novella train station, you'll be only 10 minutes on foot from the main sights, such as the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria or Ponte Vecchio.
