Where to Stay in Rome: Best Neighbourhoods & Hotels

We’ve visited Rome many times (most recently in May 2026), and from our experience, staying in the right location can make a huge difference.

If it’s your first time in Rome, we recommend choosing somewhere central so you can spend less time getting around and more time exploring the city.

Our favourite areas include:

  • Piazza Barberini
  • the Trevi Fountain
  • the Spanish Steps
  • the Pantheon
  • Campo de’ Fiori
  • Piazza Navona,
  • Monti and Prati.

Trastevere is also a great choice if you don’t mind being a little farther from some of the main sights.

If you’re arriving by train, staying near Roma Termini railway station can also be very convenient, but we’d choose a hotel a few streets away from the station for a quieter atmosphere.

We’d focus on location first and, especially in summer, make sure your accommodation has air conditioning.

After visiting Rome so many times, we’ve also discovered a few areas we wouldn’t have chosen at first — including one that became one of our favourite places to stay.

We’ll share it below.

How we usually book accommodation in Rome

We usually use Booking.com to find our stays in Rome.

With plenty of options, trusted reviews, and flexible booking choices, Booking.com is our go-to platform for finding accommodation in Rome.

With just a few clicks, you’ll receive confirmation of your stay, with options to pay online or at the hotel (when available). You can also easily update your reservation or cancel it if your booking allows.

👍 We can't recommend LIV Tours' Golf Cart Tour enough—it was the perfect mix of sightseeing, history, and fun 🛺😍

Where to stay near Roma Termini

If you’re arriving in Rome by train, staying near Roma Termini can be very convenient.

We’ve stayed in this area several times and love how easy it is to get around, although we recommend choosing a hotel a few streets away from the station for a quieter atmosphere (to the south and west).

Here are some of our favourite places to stay near Termini.

Sophie Terrace Hotel

Sophie Terrace Hotel is one of our favourite places to stay near Termini. We’ve stayed here several times and have always had a great experience.

The location is excellent, with the Colosseum, Monti, Via Nazionale and Piazza della Repubblica all within easy reach.

The rooms are modern and comfortable, but what really stands out is the friendly, attentive staff. We also love the rooftop terrace, which is a lovely spot for coffee or a drink with city views.

We also love shopping along Via del Tritone, especially at Rinascente, and you can easily walk there from the hotel.

The Sophie Terrace Hotel is our go-to choice for a one-night stay when we’re travelling to Florence via Rome.

👉 We took the LivTours Golf Cart Tour of Rome, which starts just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel at Piazza della Repubblica.

Where to stay near the Colosseum

Tourists capturing photos of the Colosseum during their visit to RomeWe love staying near the Colosseum — it’s hard to beat waking up close to Rome’s most famous sights

One of our favorite areas to stay in Rome is Monti, located between Termini Station and the Colosseum.

We love its local, residential feel, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, small shops, and places to eat. The neighborhood stretches to Via Nazionale, a lively shopping street that leads towards Piazza Venezia. From Cavour Metro Station, you can also easily reach the Vatican by metro.

Here are some of the places we love staying near the Colosseum.

Nerva Boutique Hotel

Nerva Boutique Hotel is, in our opinion, one of the best places to stay in Rome. Its location is hard to beat — just steps from the Roman Forum and Colosseum, with the Jewish Ghetto, Campo de’ Fiori and other highlights within walking distance.

The Altare della Patria, with stunning views of the Colosseum in the distance, is only a short walk away.

We love the cosy rooms, elegant Italian design and warm, personal service.

Being family-run, the hotel has a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

The Aurora Bistrot & Bar is another highlight, especially for breakfast and aperitivo.

A wonderful choice if you’re looking for a charming and central stay near the Colosseum.

👉 We loved taking this Roman pasta-making class in a modern studio just a short walk from the hotel!

Monti Palace Hotel

Lovely hotel with nice amenities and a rooftop terrace where you can have a breakfast or a drink.

Rooms are spacious and beautiful and the service is fantastic. Location is great with close walking distance of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Altare della Patria. There are also lots of restaurants and cafés nearby.

👉 Explore the Colosseum – this small-group tour with LivTours was our favorite.
