At first, we thought guided tours in Rome weren’t really worth the money.

We preferred exploring on our own, wandering at our own pace and staying away from big tour groups.

That all changed when we took our very first tour in Rome — a foodie tour through the Jewish Ghetto.

We still look back fondly on that summer evening spent strolling around Rome with our lovely guide, Roberta, and sampling all kinds of delicious food. It turned out to be such a great find!

Since then, we’ve become big fans of guided tours in Rome, although we still prefer smaller groups.

Do you really need a guided tour in Rome?

The answer to this question depends on whats your style of sightseeing.

If you prefer to wander on your own, stop when something cathes your eyes, then you could skip the rome tour. An audio guide is a cheaper way to learn about the history and stories behind the sights while still having the freedom to explore on your own.

There’s something special about switching off and letting your guide take care of everything. No worrying about transport, tickets, or which way to turn. Just relax and enjoy Rome!

Colosseum tours: Which option is right for you?

The Colosseum offers several tour options, and the right one depends on how much you want to see.

1. Colosseum + Roman Forum — Perfect for first-timers who want the highlights without spending hours inside.
2. Colosseum + Arena Floor — Get closer to the action and step onto the arena floor where gladiators once fought.
3. Colosseum + Arena + Underground — The full experience, including areas most visitors never see. Best for serious history buffs.

💡 Our tip: First time in Rome? The standard tour is plenty. Colosseum fan? Go for the Arena + Underground — it’s worth the extra peek behind the scenes.

Vatican Tours: Early Entry or Standard?

The Vatican Museums can be overwhelming, especially when the crowds are heavy. When choosing a Vatican tour, we think two things matter most:

1. Early entry or standard entry? Early entry costs more, but it can make a big difference when visiting the Sistine Chapel with fewer crowds.
2. Vatican and Colosseum together or separately? Combining both in one day can save time on a short trip, but it makes for a long day. If you’re staying three days or more, we’d rather spread them over two mornings.

💡 Our tip: In the busy season (May–September), book your Vatican tour 4–8 weeks ahead, as popular time slots can sell out quickly.

Our tips for choosing a Rome tour

Check the group size

Opt for a smaller group for a better experience.

LivTours offers small-group tours that make exploring Rome feel more personal.

All the tours we took were small-group experiences, from the Prati foodie tour to golf cart tour in Rome with just 7–8 people. It felt like exploring with friends, and we had plenty of opportunities to ask our guides questions.

It’s definitely worth paying a little more for a more personal and enjoyable experience.

Look at what’s included

Make sure your tour includes an entrance ticket. Most guided tours of the Colosseum and Vatican Museums take care of tickets for you and offer skip-the-line access, so you can head straight inside with your guide. You’ll still need to pass through security checks.

Choose the right length

Rome tours come in different lengths. If you just want a quick introduction to the Colosseum and plan to explore more of Rome, especially if you’re visiting for just one day, choose a shorter tour.

For a more in-depth experience, opt for a 2–3-hour tour. There are plenty of options to choose from, depending on how much you want to see and learn.

We usually read reviews from previous tour participants. We look at the group size, whether the guide was engaging and friendly, and whether the tour felt rushed.

• Think about your interests. History buff? Food lover? First-time visitor? Choose a tour that matches what you actually enjoy.
• Don’t automatically pick the cheapest option — A great guide and a small group can make a big difference.
• Check the meeting point — Rome is big, and you don’t want to start your tour already stressed and out of breath! Take a taxi to quickly get from for example Prati to Trastevere, the Colosseum or Termini!
• Book popular tours ahead — Especially for the Colosseum, Vatican, and other major attractions.
• Check the cancellation policy — Plans in Rome can change, so flexible cancellation is a nice bonus.
