    If you like stopping when something catches your eye or taking your time, exploring Rome independently can be a great option.
    An audio guide is a cheaper way to learn about the history and stories behind the sights while still having the freedom to explore on your own.

Our thoughts on guided tours of Rome

At first, we thought guided tours in Rome were a waste of money.

We preferred exploring on our own, walking at our own pace and avoiding large groups.

That changed when we took our first-ever tour in Rome — a food tour in the Jewish Ghetto.

Colosseum tours: Which option is right for you?

The Colosseum offers several tour options, and the right one depends on how much you want to see.

  1. Colosseum + Roman Forum — Perfect for first-timers who want the highlights without spending hours inside.
  2. Colosseum + Arena Floor — Get closer to the action and step onto the arena floor where gladiators once fought.
  3. Colosseum + Arena + Underground — The full experience, including areas most visitors never see. Best for serious history buffs.

💡 Our tip: First time in Rome? The standard tour is plenty. Colosseum fan? Go for the Arena + Underground — it’s worth the extra peek behind the scenes.

Vatican Tours: Early Entry or Standard?

The Vatican Museums can be overwhelming, especially when the crowds are heavy. When choosing a Vatican tour, we think two things matter most:

  1. Early entry or standard entry? Early entry costs more, but it can make a big difference when visiting the Sistine Chapel with fewer crowds.
  2. Vatican and Colosseum together or separately? Combining both in one day can save time on a short trip, but it makes for a long day. If you’re staying three days or more, we’d rather spread them over two mornings.

💡 Our tip: In the busy season (May–September), book your Vatican tour 4–8 weeks ahead, as popular time slots can sell out quickly.

Our tips for choosing a Rome tour

  • Check the group size — Smaller groups usually mean a more personal experience and a better chance to ask questions. You'll be face-to-face with your guide and interact with her/him.
  • Look at what’s included — Make sure the ticket, entrance fees, and skip-the-line access are actually included.
  • Choose the right length — A 3-hour tour can be great for the highlights; longer tours are better if you want to go deeper.
  • Read recent reviews — Look for comments about the guide, group size, organization, and whether the tour felt rushed.
  • Think about your interests. History buff? Food lover? First-time visitor? Choose a tour that matches what you actually enjoy.
  • Don’t automatically pick the cheapest option — A great guide and a small group can make a big difference.
  • Check the meeting point — Rome is big, and you don’t want to start your tour already stressed and out of breath! Take a taxi to quickly get from for example Prati to Trastevere, the Colosseum or Termini!
  • Book popular tours ahead — Especially for the Colosseum, Vatican, and other major attractions.
  • Check the cancellation policy — Plans in Rome can change, so flexible cancellation is a nice bonus.
