How to choose the best time to visit Rome
If you can choose when to visit Rome, there are a few things worth thinking about before you book your trip.
- For the most pleasant weather, meaning no too cold and no to hot, come April, May, September and October
- For the least crowds, beginning of the year (january, february, march) then again November and early december
- For the most events and festivals, come in the summer, June to August

From our experience, there is no wrong time to visit Rome. Whether you want warm weather, fewer crowds, or a lively atmosphere, the city has something to offer in every season. That's why we continue to return throughout the year—and why Rome remains one of our favourite destinations in Italy.
Visiting Rome from January until mid-March
After festive season ends (after 6th of january), Rome becomes the place for easy exploration.
Wait times to the colosseum and the pantheon, are generally shorter. Go weekday morning for fewer people. Weekends tend to attract more local and domestic visitors than weekdays.
The weather is cooler with some rain, but it can also be sunny and pleasant. We remember visiting in January, and people are wearing t shirts during the day.
The days are shorter so you'll have less time for sightseeing monuments, but still you can explore museums, churches, visiting restaurants or spending time in your hotel room or pampering in spa.
Why to visit Rome early in the year
Fewer crowds
The beginning of the year is one of the best times to see Rome's most famous sights, including the Colosseum, without weaving through a sea of selfie sticks. You'll spend more time soaking up history and less time waiting for the perfect photo.
Lower hotel prices
After the festive season, hotel prices often drop, making January and February one of the most affordable times to stay in Rome. That means more room in your budget for fresh pasta, creamy gelato, and maybe even an extra espresso or two.
Rome is more authentic
Winter brings a slower pace to the Eternal City. Wander through charming piazzas, linger in cosy cafés, and discover neighbourhoods where everyday Roman life takes centre stage. It's the perfect season to experience the city's authentic character beyond the famous landmarks.

Visiting Rome from April until the end of May
The months of April and May are among the best months for visiting rome thanks to the pleasant weather, with mild temperatures around 15-20 C, days starting to get longer, nice spring vibe with flowers all around the city. Spending time in gardens and parks is ideal in spring.

Summer also brings special experiences, like evening visits to the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, when these famous places feel even more magical.
Add in peaceful walks through Rome’s parks, open-air concerts, and opera performances under the night sky, and it’s easy to see why summer is such a wonderful time to visit the Eternal City.

Autumn (September to November) is another favourite. The weather remains comfortable, the summer crowds begin to ease, and the city has a relaxed and welcoming feel.

We love shopping in Rome, whether it’s for clothes, shoes, fragrances, or beautiful kitchenware — the choice is endless. The best time to visit Rome for shopping is usually January and July, when the seasonal sales (saldi) bring great discounts in many shops and department stores.
We especially enjoy wandering through the Coin Excelsior on Via Cola di Rienzo, where you can find fashion, beauty products, and Italian brands all under one roof.
