Depending on your fare and when you arrive, you may need to change your ticket or purchase a new one.

We’ve taken the Rome to Florence train many times, and we know that missing your train can leave you with a lot of questions, such as:

  • What if I have a Trenitalia ticket?
  • What if I have an Italo ticket?
  • Can I get a refund if I miss my train?
  • What if I missed my train because my previous train was delayed?
  • What if the next train is full?

Here’s what you need to know and what we would do if we missed our Rome to Florence train.

Can you take the next train to Florence?

The good news is that there are numerous trains from Rome to Florence, so you may be able to catch the next available train.

However, don't assume that you can simply use the same ticket on another train.

First, check whether your ticket is changeable and what conditions apply.

Both Trenitalia and Italo offer different ticket types with different change and refund conditions, so you need to check which fare you purchased.

If you are already at Roma Termini, the quickest solution may be to speak to staff at the relevant operator's ticket desk.

They can check your ticket and explain your options for changing your booking or taking a later train.

From our experience, the staff at the Trenitalia office at Termini are professional and helpful, and they have resolved any issues we have had with our tickets. There may be a queue, but it usually moves quickly.

Do I need to buy a new ticket?

If You Missed a Trenitalia Train

Trenitalia's rules depend on the type of ticket you bought.

  • Super Economy - the cheapest but not possible to change
  • Economy - can be exchanged unlimited times just before departure and are refundable with 20% fee
  • Base - Can be exchanged for free, an unlimited amount of times before departure. Can only be exchanged once, up to one hour after departure, at the departure station’s ticket office. Refundable before departure only, for 80% of the ticket price, if the ticket price is more than €10 (per passenger).

So if you bought Super Economy fare, you'll need to buy a completely new ticket.

Economy ticket fare can be changed before the departure. The only fare ticket that you can change after the train departed, is Base fare.

With some Base fare tickets, you may be able to change your ticket even after the train has left. In some cases, you may also be able to take another train on the same route, but you may need to pay a fee.

Some fares, such as Economy, don't allow you to simply take another train after missing your departure. Refunds may also not be available after departure.

Always check the conditions of your ticket or ask Trenitalia staff before getting on another train.

If You Missed an Italo Train

Italo has different rules.

For eligible Italo fares, the Extra Time service can allow passengers who missed their train to find a seat on the next available train by contacting Italo staff at the station or the Italo assistance service. It is subject to availability and can involve a fixed charge plus any fare difference. IItalo

The exact options depend on the fare and services included with your ticket, so check your booking before buying another ticket.

What If You Simply Arrived at Roma Termini Too Late?

If you arrive at the station after your train has left, the rules are different from a train cancellation or delay.

What you can do depends on your ticket.

What should you do?

  1. Check your ticket conditions.
  2. See if you can still change your booking.
  3. Ask the train operator if you can take a later train.
  4. Only buy a new ticket if you need to.

If you bought your ticket online, you may also be able to manage your booking online. For Trenitalia, you can use your booking details or PNR to check and manage eligible tickets.

Can I change my Rome to Florence ticket on Trainline?
If your ticket allows changes, you can usually change it in the Trainline app before your scheduled departure. Check your booking to see whether a change is available and whether there is a fee.

What if I missed my train because my previous train was delayed?

This situation can be different.

For example, imagine you have:

Naples → Rome → Florence

and your Naples–Rome train arrives late, causing you to miss your booked Rome–Florence connection.

Don't immediately buy a replacement ticket.

Keep your original tickets and speak to railway staff. Depending on how your journey was booked and the applicable conditions, you may have different rights or rebooking options.

This is particularly important when the entire journey was purchased as a single booking rather than as two completely separate tickets.

Our suggestion

If you know there is a chance you might miss your train, choosing a flexible fare when booking can give you more options and potentially avoid having to buy a completely new ticket.

If you think you may miss your Rome → Florence train, the type of ticket you bought can make a big difference.

If you have a flexible ticket

  • Trenitalia Frecciarossa – Base fare: This is one of the more flexible options. You can generally change your travel date or time before departure, subject to the fare rules and any difference in price. Changes may also be possible shortly after the scheduled departure.
  • Italo – Flex fare: This is Italo's flexible option. You can change the date or time up to shortly before departure, subject to the applicable fare rules and any difference in price.
  • Italo Economy: Changes are possible, but a fee may apply in addition to any difference in fare.
  • Trenitalia Economy: Changes are more restricted than with the Base fare and may require payment of the difference to the applicable fare.

What if you have a hotel or tour booked in Florence?

If missing your train means you'll arrive in Florence much later than planned, consider contacting your hotel or tour provider as soon as possible.

This is especially important if you have:

  • A timed museum entry for example for the Uffizi or Accademia
  • A guided tour of the Florence's centro storico
  • A restaurant reservation in Florence
  • A hotel check-in deadline
  • Another train connection

Keep your replacement ticket or other travel documentation in case you need evidence of the disruption.

Don't confuse a missed train with a cancelled train

The rules can be very different.

You missed the train:
Your booked train departed, but you weren't on it.

Your train was cancelled:
The railway operator cancelled the scheduled service.

Your train was delayed:
The train operated but arrived or departed later than scheduled.

If the railway company cancelled your train, don't automatically treat it as a missed train. Check the operator's current instructions for rebooking and refunds.
