We travel between Rome and Florence all year round, so we've learned a few tricks for finding affordable train tickets.
The biggest one? Book 2–3 months in advance. That's when the cheapest fares are usually released. As your travel date gets closer, prices tend to rise.
We regularly book Business Class on Frecciarossa for around €30 by planning ahead.
Right now (July), Super Economy fares start from:
- Standard: €23.90
- Premium: €27.90
- Business: €32.90
These are the lowest fares, but they're non-refundable and can't be changed, so they're best if your travel plans are set.
If you'd rather have some flexibility, Economy tickets allow you to change your travel date and time.

Steps for booking Rome to Florence train tickets on Trainline
Step 1 - Visit Trainline website
Select route by entering From: Rome (Roma) To: Florence (Firenze), next select your travel date and number of passengers.
Step 2 - Choose your train (select ticket class and seat)
High-speed trains like Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo are the fastest options (around 1.5 hours). See departure times, prices, and ticket conditions. Choose the ticket type that suits you (flexible, standard, or cheaper non-refundable options).
Step 4 - Enter passenger details:
Add your name, surname and email on which youll receive the ticket and other info. Double-check details before payment.
Step 5 - Pay and receive your ticket
Complete the payment. Your ticket will be sent by email and available in the Trainline app.

Your train ticket might look like a jumble of numbers and codes, but each detail has an important job. Here’s what to look for:
🕒 Departure time & date
This tells you when your adventure begins! Plan to arrive at Termini Station at least 30 minutes before departure so you have plenty of time to find your train, platform, and settle in.
🚄 Train number (Frecciarossa 9330)
This is your train’s “name tag.”
- When you arrive at Termini, look for this number on the departure boards — it will tell you which platform (Binario) your train leaves from.
- Once you reach the platform, do a quick double-check that the same train number appears on the small platform display. Better safe than sprinting with luggage!
🚪 Coach number (Carrozza)
Your coach is your train “room.” Our example was Coach 4. Look for the number displayed near the doors of each carriage (called carrozza in Italian) and hop on the right one.
💺 Seat number (for example: 20A)
Once inside your coach, find your seat number and get comfortable. Soon you’ll be watching the Italian countryside roll by!

This little square is your golden ticket. It’s the proof of your reservation. The conductor will scan it during the journey — just have your phone ready and enjoy the ride.

The Rome–Florence route is one of Italy's busiest, with trains running from early morning until late evening.
- 🚄 High-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo and Frecciargento): Depart every 10–20 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes about 1.5 hours.
- 🚆 Intercity trains: Run several times a day, take around 3 hours, and are usually cheaper than high-speed services.

Best train from Rome to Florence: Frecciarossa or Italo?
Choose high-speed trains for the fastest and easiest way to travel from Rome to Florence — the journey takes only about 90 minutes.
We’ve personally used Trenitalia Frecciarossa trains on this route and always had a great experience, so they’re our preferred choice.
Why we like Frecciarossa:

- 📍 Easy to find at Rome Termini and Florence Santa Maria Novella stations

Another popular option is Italo, which also runs high-speed trains between Rome and Florence. They usually have fewer departures, but many travellers love them for their comfort and competitive prices. We haven’t tried Italo yet, but it’s on our list for the next trip.
