Best way to buy Rome to Florence train tickets

We always book our Rome to Florence train tickets at least 2–3 months in advance.

That way, we can secure the best fares and have everything sorted before we even arrive in Rome.

Our go-to platform is Trainline because it makes booking train tickets in Italy quick and straightforward.

It covers routes all across the country, including the popular Rome to Florence journey.

Simply enter your travel date, and you'll see every available train, along with departure and arrival times, journey duration, stops (although most high-speed trains are direct), ticket prices, and travel classes.

Once you've booked, your e-ticket arrives in your inbox within minutes.

It includes all your travel details and a QR code, so there's no need to print anything—just show it to the conductor when asked.

Step-by-step guide to booking Rome to Florence train tickets

Step 1 – Visit Trainline website

The Rome to Florence route is already selected — simply choose your travel date, number of travellers, and whether you need a one-way or return journey.

Step 2 – Select your train, ticket class, and seat

A list of all trains available on your selected day will appear here in chronological order. You’ll see Frecciarossa, Italo, and Intercity trains. Compare departure times, travel duration, and prices to choose the best option for you.

Prices are shown by ticket class and ticket type (changeable or non-changeable).

Step 4 – Choose your preferred seat (or skip)

Next, choose your seat. Browse the carriage map and select your preferred seat — aisle or window.

You can also skip this step, and a seat will be assigned to you automatically.

We recommend choosing a seat near the luggage rack for easy access to your bags when you arrive in Florence.

Step 5 – Enter passenger details

Enter all passenger details and your email address to receive the ticket. Double-check your information before payment.

Step 6 – Pay and receive your e-ticket

Complete your payment by credit card. Your ticket will be sent to your email and will also be available in the Trainline app.

How to buy cheap train tickets from Rome to Florence

1. Book at least 2-3 months in advance

If you're traveling from Rome to Florence, try to book your train tickets 2–3 months in advance.

Tickets go on sale months ahead, and prices usually increase as the travel date gets closer. We ended up getting Business Class seats on Frecciarossa for only €32.90 by booking early.

2. Opt for Super Economy tickets

These are the cheapest ones - in which date or travel can be changed. Right now (august 2026) we found tickets for travel in september for only €23.90, premium €27.90 and business €32.90.

If you'd rather have some flexibility, Economy tickets allow you to change your travel date and time. 

• Standard: €39.90
• Premium: €42.90
• Business: €52.90

How to read your digital Rome to Florence train ticket (without the stress!)

Your train ticket might look like a jumble of numbers and codes, but each detail has an important job.

Here’s what to look for:

🕒 Departure time & date

This tells you when your adventure begins!

Plan to arrive at Termini Station at least 30 minutes before departure so you have plenty of time to find your train, platform, and settle in.

We love Sophie Terrace Hotel — close enough to walk there in 5 minutes, even with your bags in tow.

🚄 Train number (Frecciarossa 9330)

This is your train’s “name tag.”

• When you arrive at Termini, look for this number on the departure boards — it will tell you which platform (Binario) your train leaves from.
• Once you reach the platform, do a quick double-check that the same train number appears on the small platform display. Better safe than sprinting with luggage!

🚪 Coach number (Carrozza)

Your coach is your train “room.” In our example, we were in Coach 4, which was Premium Class.

Look for the number displayed near the doors of each carriage (called carrozza in Italian) and make sure you board the correct one.

If you’re in Carriages 1 or 2 (Business Class), hurry—they’re farther down the platform.

Once inside your coach, find your seat number and get comfortable. Soon you’ll be watching the Italian countryside roll by!

📱 QR Code

This little square is your golden ticket. It’s the proof of your reservation. The conductor will scan it during the journey — just have your phone ready and enjoy the ride.

✨ Pro tip: Keep your ticket easy to find on your phone before boarding (and maybe take a screenshot, just in case your signal decides to take a vacation too!).

Seats on Frecciarossa trains

On Frecciarossa trains, the best seats depend on your preference, but Premium Class is a great balance of comfort and value. Seats are spacious, arranged in a quiet and comfortable carriage, and usually include a welcome service with a snack and drink.

For the best experience:

• Solo travelers: Choose a single seat (when available) for more privacy.
• Couples or friends: Choose two seats together (often marked as “1” and “2” or “A” and “B” depending on the layout).
• Window lovers: Pick a window seat for views of the Italian countryside.
• Quiet ride: Choose a seat away from the doors and toilets, usually toward the middle of the carriage.
• Best overall location: Seats in the middle of the coach tend to have less noise and movement.

Frecciarossa seating classes:

• Executive: Most luxurious, with wide reclining seats and extra space.
• Business: Very comfortable, with larger seats and more privacy.
• Premium: Similar to Standard but with upgraded service and a quieter, more comfortable environment.
• Standard: Comfortable and good value, especially for shorter journeys.

For most travelers, Premium Class in the middle of the carriage, away from the doors, is the sweet spot.

Rome to Florence train schedule: How often do trains run?

The Rome–Florence route is one of Italy’s busiest, with trains running from early morning until late evening, so it’s easy to find a departure that works for you.

• 🚄 High-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo, Frecciargento): Depart roughly every 10–20 minutes throughout the day and get you to Florence in about 1.5 hours
• 🚆 Intercity trains: Run several times a day, take around 3 hours, and are a good option if you’re looking for a more affordable fare

Rome Termini Station can get busy, so arrive at least 30 minutes before your train departure to allow time to find your platform and coach without rushing

Best train from Rome to Florence: Frecciarossa or Italo?

To be honest, we have only used Frecciarossa trains between Roma Termini and Santa Maria Novella train station, but we have taken this route many times.

Most journeys were smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Only once was our train cancelled (we simply took the next one), and we experienced a few short delays due to issues on the railway line.

Why we choose Frecciarossa

• 🚄 Many daily departures from early morning until late evening
• 🧳 Clean, comfy trains with friendly staff ready to help along the way
• 📍 Easy to find at Rome Termini and Florence Santa Maria Novella stations (the platforms are close to the entrance gates).

Italo is another popular high-speed option between Rome and Florence.

It offers comfortable trains and competitive prices, though with fewer departures.

We haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on our list for the next trip.

On our Trenitalia Frecciarossa Business Class journey, we received a small welcome snack served directly at our seat.

It was a nice touch and made the trip feel a little more comfortable.
